MEN'S SET WORK CHALLENGE

On 18 May Samuel Clarke and Josh Millard represented the South East in Ipswich in the Men's Set Work Challenge. The boys enjoyed taking part in a national event and performing in a large gym. Sam finished in 9th place in the Primary 4 competition. Josh finished 4th in the Primary 3 competition. To view the results from the event please click here

Callan Hall and Kasbian Rogers qualified in 6th and 4th place respectively for the South East Primary 4 and Primary 3 teams back in March. They travelled up to Newcastle at the start of May to represent their region in this large national event. It can be quite daunting to compete in such a large atmosphere surrounded by gymnasts, coaches and supporters from across the country, especially for younger gymnasts. Both Callan and Kasbian rose to the occassion and produced some strong routines and good scores. In a system where all six members of a team perform and the top four scores go towards the team's total, Callan and Kasbian managed to contribute four scores each for their teams.

Callan represented the South East on the Primary 4 team alongside gymnasts from Pegasus, Hawth and Brighton & Hove. This was Callan's biggest competition to date. He had been feeling a little unwell beforehand and was quite nervous. He made the most of his warm up and gave 100% on his competition routines, peaking on each piece in front of the judges. The team as a whole performed very strongly and finished in first place with a total of 256.350. Callan's personal total was 61.050, placing him 26th out of 67 gymnasts.

Kasbian represented the region on the Primary 3 team and was also joined by gymnasts from Pegasus, Hawth and Brighton & Hove. Kasbian competed in this competition last year. He returned this year with more confidence and focus and some very good work. His team took home silver medals after finishing with 251.650. His personal total was 61.600 which placed him an impressive 16th out of 65 competitors.

Well done and congratulations to both Callan and Kasbian.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

At the start of December we threw our Christmas party for all our members, family and friends. The night was a huge success and enjoyed by all. We had a very special visitor, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS who spent half an hour meeting all the children and giving out presents from his wonderful underwater grotto with bubbles galore! Guests also enjoyed the debut performance of Clare and her Team Gym squad.

We took the opportunity at our Christmas party to present our annual club awards to those gymnasts who have worked extra hard and stood out over the past 12 months.

Each of our Preschool gymnasts were presented with a certificate and medal for being such pleasures to work with.

Several of our General Gymnastics class members were rewarded for their progression this year. Well done to Leah Thorp, Freya Collard, Kimberley Foster, Madeline Reynolds, Grant Brookes, Rosie Farrance, Elise St John, Neve Whittaker, Abbie Curd, Alice Prior, Georgia Moore, Eva Roche and Connor Demirtunc.

Medals of Achievement were presented to Jemima Beal, Natalie Andrews and Gemma Morgan for each being selected for the Women's Artistic County Squad in 2007. Medals of Achievement also went to Kasbian Rogers and Jack Cooper for representing the South East at the British Men's Set Work Championships.

Our up and coming Team Gym squad were presented with framed photos by their coach, Clare, for all their work towards coming together as a team so well.

Anna Marosi was preseend with the Floor & Vault award for showing good progress all year.

Robyn Mackay received the Friends Cup for showing good attention to detail and always being polite and considerate.

Gemma Morgan was awarded the Kent Cup for maintaining a good progression all year despite injury and remaining motivated at all times.

Development Awards went to Josie Martin, Libby Begbie and Callan Hall for each showing very good work and effort in the gym and progressing so well at such young ages.

Jemima Beal and Erin Burt were awarded Junior Improver Awards in recognition of their consistent effort and the level of work they have achieved over the past year.

Kasbian Rogers was named Junior Gymnast of the Year for always putting in maximum effort and achieving consistently good competition results including individual bronze at Regional Grades, team silver at National Grades Finals, team gold and the Kent Floor & Vault and individual gold at the Pegasus Junior Open.

Kayley Watkins was named Senior Gymnast of the Year for working extremely hard all year round and not slowing down even when she dislocated her elbow.

Kayley was also presented with the Gymnast of the Year cup in honor of her work in the club as a whole. Kayley always uses her position as the eldest elite gymnast in a mature and responsible manner and has become a well respected role model for all the younger gymnasts. She has also worked very hard to become a wonderful assistant coach.

Well done to all the gymnasts and thank you to all the parents, volunteers and coaches for making 2007 a successful year for Summerfields Gymnastics Club.

CONGRATULATIONS JODIE

Jodie Saxby, one of our coaches, finished in second place in the Young Coach Of The Year category at the Sussex Sports Awards at the end of last year. Well done and congratulations from everyone at Summerfields!

BRIGHTON & HOVE GYMNASTICS CLUB VISIT FOR SLEEPOVER

On Saturday 18 August boys and girls from Brighton & Hove Gymnastics Club arrived at Summerfields accompanied by their coaches. After several hours of training everyone enjoyed a BBQ outside and then some free time to play inside the gym.

As the evening approached things calmed down with some movies. Everyone watched DVDs on the TV from their sleeping bags and gradually fell asleep, giving the coaches and volunteers a few hours of peace.

The next morning the children were raring to go again so a few more hours of training were then followed by games and cake (we had a few birthdays to celebrate).

By the time Sunday lunch and the time to say goodbye had arrived everyone had enjoyed many hours of training, fun and making new friends.

Big thanks to Nony, Tracey, Mandy and Lee for making the weekend run so smoothly and keeping everyone fed! Thanks to the Summerfields coaches (Brenda, Emma, Matte and Dale) for hosting and thanks also to the Brighton & Hove coaches (Dave, Kim and Kelly) for giving up their weekend and brining their gymnasts. We hope to have you all over again soon.
